Jacob's Story

Jacob Coxon photo

Jacob, age 27 was involved in an accident which left him with 14% sight. Jacob came to us as he really wanted to work again but was unsure what he could do after leaving his career in retail management following the accident. Jacob has an infectious personality, good sense of humour and a quickly showed signs of being a natural counsellor, following a conversation with a qualified counsellor, it made perfect sense that we would consider this as a career choice for him.

After some research we registered his interest in undertaking the CPCAB Certificate in Level 2 in Counselling skills course. It was identified that Jacob would need to update his IT skills, taking into consideration his limited sight. Community Housing supported Jacob and suggested he used Orcam to enable him to read information and were able to initially offer loan equipment to support, Jacob couldn’t thank them enough for the difference that this support made and was overjoyed when Community Housing were then able to offer a laptop and software for him to keep permanently. We liaised with DIAL and Sight Concern Worcestershire for additional support and looked at trained volunteering opportunities to increase his confidence with the potential to lead to paid employment in counselling.

Jacob and his Mom, have described the support and help from us so far as being 'overwhelming' and cannot thank everyone enough, as they felt 'doors were always closing when finding out information and accessing services'. We know Jacob will make an excellent Counsellor and are proud that we could be a part of his journey.
