New “safe houses” offer hope for domestic abuse survivors

Two newly upgraded properties are now providing a safe haven for survivors of domestic abuse, thanks to teamwork between Community Housing and local contractors. These homes are part of what's called the Sanctuary Scheme – a special program that helps people who have experienced domestic abuse stay safely in their homes after leaving an abusive relationship.

The two homes have been fitted with extra security features to keep residents safe. These added special security measures to a property make it much harder for anyone to break in or cause harm. In these houses, this includes:

  • Extra-strong doors with advanced security systems.
  • Reinforced windows that are extremely difficult to break.
  • High fences that make it harder for unwanted visitors to get near the property.
  • Additional security features throughout the home.

Working together to make a difference

This project shows how Community Housing's contracts can benefit residents in unexpected ways. When Bell Group and Novus Property Solutions won their contracts with us, they committed to adding "social value" – meaning they promised to give something extra back to the community beyond their usual work. The Sanctuary Scheme is a perfect example of this commitment in action.

Both companies chose to invest their time, skills and resources into this vital project. It shows how working with the right contractors can make a real difference to people's lives.

Luke McGuire from Bell Group explains: "As 'Domestic Abuse Covenant' Signatories, we were particularly passionate about this project. Sanctuary House aligns to our key beliefs and overarching company mission; to fundamentally make a positive, longstanding impact on the environment and lives of those within the communities in which we work."

Darren Bowkett from Novus adds: "Novus Property Solutions are proud of our promise to delivering social value commitment. The Sanctuary Scheme was a great example and opportunity for Novus to demonstrate its social value pledge and help support this essential service to the local community."

More than just a house

These homes represent much more than just bricks and mortar – they're a fresh start for people who have faced domestic abuse. They offer a chance to rebuild lives in a secure environment, knowing that extra measures are in place to ensure safety.

Mel Bailey, Head of Housing for Community Housing, commented: "Domestic abuse affects far too many lives, and it is our responsibility to do everything we can to support survivors. Thanks to the incredible support from Bell Group and Novus, these safe houses are a testament to what we can achieve together when we focus on social value and community wellbeing."
