As your landlord, we carry out annual gas safety checks to keep your home safe, but it’s also important to know the facts. Believing the wrong advice could lead to serious danger from gas leaks or carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning.
As part of Gas Safety Week 2025, we are here to bust some of the most common gas safety myths that we hear and explain what you really need to know.
Whilst natural gas has a strong smell added to help you notice leaks, carbon monoxide (CO) has no smell at all. You can’t see it, taste it, or smell it, which is why it’s called the “silent killer.” Even with natural gas, small leaks aren’t always obvious straight away.
That’s why it’s vital to have working gas appliances checked regularly, and to make sure your CO alarm is installed and tested. Never rely on your sense of smell alone to keep you safe.
Because they use bottled gas, they can easily become faulty or give off dangerous fumes if not properly maintained. You should never skip safety checks on portable heaters.
Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions, make sure they’re serviced regularly, and never use them in small, unventilated rooms.
Faults in gas appliances are often hidden, and you won’t see them just by looking. An appliance might look normal but still be leaking carbon monoxide or burning fuel incorrectly.
That’s why our annual gas safety checks are so important - a Gas Safe registered engineer can spot issues you never would by eye.
Only Gas Safe registered engineers are legally allowed to work on gas appliances. Trying to fix/install a boiler or a gas fire yourself might look like a money-saver, but it could cost lives.
Unsafe work risks explosions, gas leaks, or carbon monoxide poisoning.
If you ever think there’s an issue with your gas appliances, contact our Customer Service Team here, and they will arrange for a Gas Safe registered engineer to visit your property and check it out.
Never attempt DIY gas work.
That includes cookers, fires, gas heaters, and even solid fuel stoves.
Boilers are one of the most common sources, but they’re not the only risk.
That’s why it’s important to have CO alarms in your home, not just near the boiler but in living rooms and bedrooms too.
Gas safety myths can be dangerous if they stop people from taking the right action. The reality is that appliances need regular checks, only Gas Safe engineers should carry out gas work, and carbon monoxide can come from more than just boilers.
As your landlord, we’ll continue to carry out annual gas safety checks to keep you safe. But you can play your part too: test your carbon monoxide alarm, report repairs quickly, and don’t fall for the myths.
