A Community that cares: how Berrington Court helped a family through loss and dementia

When "Helen’s" father passed away, life changed in ways her family never expected. Grief alone is difficult, but when paired with the challenges of dementia, everyday life can quickly become overwhelming. For Helen’s mum, those challenges have been eased by an unexpected source of comfort and community: the team and residents at Berrington Court.

Although she isn’t a resident, Helen’s mum has found connection, routine, and genuine friendship within Berrington Court’s welcoming environment — turning casual visits into a lifeline during some of the hardest moments of her life.

A warm welcome, every time

From the moment she walks through the doors, the staff at Berrington Court greet her with kindness and familiarity. They remember her stories, ask after her wellbeing, and make her feel like part of the family — not just a visitor.

Residents have embraced her just as warmly. Through conversations, shared laughter, and small daily interactions, they’ve helped rebuild her confidence and brought joy back into her days.

Brighter Minds: a spark of purpose

One of the most meaningful sources of support has been Brighter Minds, Berrington Court’s dementia-friendly activity group designed to spark connection, engagement, and happiness.

The group has given Helen’s mum:

  • A renewed sense of purpose
  • A safe place to connect with others
  • Meaningful activities that stimulate and engage
  • New friendships that brighten her week

These positive moments remind the family that belonging isn’t defined by where you live, but by how a community chooses to embrace you.

Compassion that extends beyond the building

It isn’t just Berrington Court that has provided support. Helen shared how her colleagues and manager have been a constant source of understanding and flexibility. That workplace compassion has allowed her to focus on what matters most: being there for her mum through grief, transition, and the uncertainty dementia brings.

A heartfelt Thank You

Helen expresses deep gratitude to:

The staff and residents at Berrington Court — for welcoming her mum with open arms
The Brighter Minds team and volunteers — especially Angela McGuire, for creating a space where she can thrive
Community Housing colleagues — for recognising that behind every employee is a family, a story, and sometimes a heartbreak
Her mum may not live at Berrington Court, but she is cared for, valued, and uplifted every time she visits — something the family will never forget.
