Community Housing strengthens LGBTQIA+ inclusion through colleague training

The sessions, delivered by Worcestershire Based Out2Gether  brought together colleagues from TeamCommunity and created a supportive space to learn, ask questions and build confidence in how to provide inclusive services to customers.

The training focused on practical, everyday actions colleagues can take to be effective allies. Topics included understanding LGBTQIA+ identities and terminology, the importance of pronouns, and how unconscious behaviours such as assumptions or misgendering can impact people’s experiences.

Colleagues also explored the specific challenges LGBTQIA+ people can face in housing, including safety, visibility, health and wellbeing, and access to services. Real-life case studies were used to help translate learning into compassionate, practical responses when working with customers.

Early feedback from participants has been positive, with colleagues reporting increased confidence in using inclusive language and a better understanding of how to challenge inappropriate behaviour in a constructive way. Many also highlighted the value of having a safe, non-judgemental space to learn together.

The training forms part of Community Housing’s wider commitment to the LGBTQIA+ Housing Pledge, as the organisation works towards HouseProud ‘Pledge Pioneer’ accreditation. This includes embedding inclusive practice into everyday services and ensuring colleagues feel equipped to support all customers with respect and dignity.

Community Housing recognises there is more to do and will continue to build on this work, with further training and guidance planned to support colleagues and improve services for LGBTQIA+ residents.
