Bite Back Week: Learn How to Spot Loan Sharks and Scams

This week is Bite Back Week, and we're working in partnership with Stop Loan Sharks England to raise awareness of the dangers of illegal money lending.

Loan sharks may seem friendly or helpful at first, but borrowing from an illegal lender can quickly lead to serious problems.

Unlike legitimate lenders, loan sharks often charge unfair interest rates, use intimidation or threats, and take advantage of people who may be struggling financially.

Scams and loan sharks often go hand in hand.

  • Scammers are becoming increasingly convincing, using text messages, emails, social media and phone calls to trick people into handing over money or personal information.
  • Loan sharks use similar tactics, building trust before exploiting vulnerable people for financial gain.

To support Bite Back Week, we've created a short video explaining some of the most common scam tactics, the warning signs of illegal money lending, and the simple steps you can take to stay safe.

Together, we can help make our communities safer and prevent people from falling victim to scams and illegal money lending.
