Welfare Reform Advice Bus - How are we helping?

Wyre Forest Community Housing (part of The Community Housing Group) have been taking a mobile service to neighbourhoods and areas across the Wyre Forest to help working age tenants who may be affected by the Government’s Welfare Reform Act.

“One of our tenants recently approached us on the Money Advice Bus, concerned with how she would pay the 14% reduction in her Housing Benefit, due to having a spare bedroom in her property.

After discussing the matter, the lady explained that she did not want to move from the property because she had recently had a stair lift fitted for her disabled son.

We know that major adaptations in the home can mean that some people will be able to get help, so after going through the tenant’s income and outgoings, we realised that she would be entitled to Discretionary Housing Payment.

We filled out the forms and sent them off, and the 14% reduction will be covered by the Discretionary Housing Payment for at least three months”.
